For I am zealous for you with a godly eagerness and a divine jealousy, for I have betrothed you to one Husband, to present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.1

It is the midnight hour.

We have fallen asleep, as have our attendants. We grew weary from the wait and could no longer stay awake.

But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.2

Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.3

Lost in slumber, we are unaware at this dark hour of the mounting excitement growing in the throneroom. All of heaven holds its breath. Then without warning, a shout is heard echoing across the sky. It is the voice of the two witnesses. These are the two men by ancient Jewish law who testified our marriage covenant, the same who signed their names after we did on the ketubah at our betrothal.

And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.4

These attendants of the bridegroom pierce the night with their percussive proclamation, announcing the arrival of the bridegroom. On the heels of their cry, a shofar sounds, cutting through the air in exclamation, and with it creation awakens.

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.5

He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice So this joy of mine has been made full.6

Fully alert now, I listen intently to the fading of the trumpet blast whose echoes dissipate reluctantly in the crisp air of pre-dawn. He has come for the Bride. He intends to take her away with Him.

My heart beats faster… He is come for me.

And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming;go out to meet him!’7

It is time.

The setting is surreal, emphasized all the more by the hour. After so much time waiting for my Bridegroom to come, why does it now seem so sudden? Is it really Him whom my soul loves?

Then I hear His voice.

The voice of my beloved! Behold, he comes leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Behold, he stands behind our wall; He is looking through the windows, gazing through the lattice. My beloved spoke, and said to me:  “Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grapes give a good smell. Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away!8
